Soil Horizons


If you dig a hole in the ground and look at the soil you have dug through, you should see a sequence of layers in the soil. For example, the "topsoil" looks different from what you find at the bottom of the pit. These layers are called horizons.

Soil horizons develop as a result of the soil forming processes acting on the parent geological material, over time.
